Yoga for Scoliosis + Posture: A Retreat to Rediscover Your Body’s Balance

For many years, I went to yoga classes and often felt like the oddball that couldn’t do certain movements.

Mechanically, I could force myself to do the poses, but my body was telling me something was off.

Finally, I listened to those messages and learned to respect my body’s wisdom.

Living with scoliosis is not a lifelong curse to have sore back, hips, pelvis, shoulders, etc … in this retreat I will teach you how to support and strengthen your body from the feet all the way up your spine!

We will work on posture through core work - these are the deepest muscles in your body that support your spine.

You will leave feeling taller, stronger, and more joyful. And loving your body just as you are.

Enjoy a weekend of connection + joy.

Bring your most challenging pose with you to the retreat and I’ll help teach you the correct modifications and proper technique. You’ll walk away knowing you can do it your way without fear.

You will discover that your body, especially your hips, holds onto emotions.

We will explore and laugh at the same time together as we go on this journey through our bodies. We’ll release old, stuck body images so we can soar above our fears from the past and feel more confident in the present.

Most of all, you’ll leave the retreat with renewed love and respect for your body.

You will spend the weekend relaxing around other soulful people as you connect to your own body’s wisdom.

Get away into the back country hills of Santa Margarita and treat yourself (because you deserve it) to a weekend retreat where you will learn, laugh, and relax (and maybe drink some wine).

About the meals:

Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free, Homemade, Organic, Raw

The Sagrada Kitchen is organic, vegetarian and mainly gluten free. We spend a lot of time menu planning for each retreat and shopping at our local farmers markets and health food stores to supplement the fresh produce from our organic garden. Our cuisine is rustic yet gourmet and is served family style. Our meals are prepared fresh each day with great attention to flavor and quality.

Our garden is more and more productive and menus are inspired by the best of what we produce. Each morning we serve strong organic coffee, our own free range organic eggs with sprouted bread and jelly, sliced tomatoes, yogurt and our famous homemade granola. We send our guests home stimulated and inspired to cook great meals at home for themselves, their family and friends.

We serve our favorite modest local wines throughout the retreat. Please bring any wines that you would like to share with the group and add them to the mix.

Every afternoon Eva blends a fresh tea with organic herbs to create a fresh and vibrant herbal beverage.

Sagrada cuisine has been a yogi's epicurean delight for over a decade now and we promise meal times at Sagrada will be nourishing and memorable.

About Emilee Garfield Emilee teaches from her heart. Her enthusiasm about yoga and Pilates is infectious, and her dynamic teaching style inspiring. She has found the practice of both disciplines to be a powerful means of developing and maintaining physical vitality, mental clarity, and a joyful engagement with life. Emilee tailors her classes to meet the needs and capabilities of each student, challenging them to build core strength and flexibility and encouraging them to open their hearts to change in their bodies. Although Emilee began practicing yoga at the age of sixteen, her own health challenges and those of others led her to discover its healing benefits. In 1996, Emilee volunteered as an assistant to an Iyengar yoga teacher at the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Santa Barbara. Witnessing firsthand the power of yoga to transform the lives of people with MS and other disabilities deepened her passion and commitment, and in 1999, Emilee embarked on a career teaching in the Iyengar style, focusing on alignment, sequencing, and timing in the asanas for a pain- and injury-free yoga practice. In 2003, Emilee discovered Pilates as a means of recovering her strength following multiple surgeries. In learning about the method’s capacity for improving posture, alignment, flexibility, and core strength, she realized that Pilates would be the perfect complement to yoga and incorporated it into her class offerings. Emilee offers private and duet Pilates instruction, private and small group yoga classes, and yoga workshops at her tranquil and intimate Santa Barbara studio. She integrates therapeutic applications of the poses with her background in physical therapy, transformative dance and authentic movement and her experience with back and neck pain, scoliosis, office ergonomics, and active sports. Emilee has trained extensively with Intermediate junior Iyengar teacher Nancy Roberts and senior Iyengar teachers Felicity Green and Elise Browning Miller. She earned her certification as a Yoga for Scoliosis trainer under Elise Browning Miller and her Pilates certification with BASI Pilates (Body Arts and Science International), under the guidance of Kristy White Cooper. Emilee holds a B.S. in Biopsychology with a minor in Dance from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
